SCULPTURE COURSES IN MILAN
FOR ALL AGES
“To sculpt is to labour greatly to make something that appears to have been made by no one” (Michelangelo Buonarroti). A sculpture course teaches this labour: the slow wresting of a form from a block of marble or a tree trunk, while forgetting oneself a little. My courses are not about inspiration, flair or originality, but about engaging with the material to be sculpted: obstinacy combined with flexibility, precision with the ability to accept and make use of error, physical involvement with the ability to remain emotionally detached. The sculptor works to the point of exhaustion to attain the simplicity of nature.
No specific preparation is required. Each student begins with their own ability to observe, reproduce or invent; the aims are not imposed at the outset, but discovered together in the course of the work.
Lessons are individual and last two hours. Wherever possible, while keeping the teacher’s attention focused on each student’s individual development, the simultaneous presence of several students—and sometimes their collaboration on the same project—is encouraged as an opportunity for mutual enrichment and the exchange of ideas.
Stone and wood are the preferred materials, but not the only ones. Learning to extract—to fill by taking away—requires study and the humility to keep trying: clay, modelling clay, plaster, polystyrene and, of course, drawing prepare the hands and the eye for the confrontation with matter.
The basic fee is 40 euros for a two-hour lesson, with reductions of up to 50% for shared time slots. Space, tools and energy are included; my personal commitment remains, above all, the pleasure of passing on what good masters and many years of experience have taught me.
